Pictures and hole in the hull… and a surprise
Today we made a hole in the hull. It is always scary. But looked much better after we put a shining new portlight in it. Two pictures of the hole:
Quite often people want to see pictures from the interior. I normally come up with a really bad explanation that I don’t have any working digital camera except my mobile phone (which is correct btw). But the truth is that the interior looks really bad on photos. Often tools are spread all over the place, and since painting and hardwood trim goes on last, everything looks dirty and unfinished.
Like this:
Here is another picture of one of the children’s bunks. It is big enough for any normal adult. But we made a special bulkhead to make it like their own little cabin. We also made some bookshelves. This will look much better when painted.
Did I say it will look much better with some paint on it?
And now for the surprise:
We would appreciate ideas for a name. Ida and Joel only created a list of 20 or so. Joels favorite name for the tender right now is “daddy” (but in Swedish of course). Personally I think it might lead to misunderstandings…

Matti,
Do not concern yourself with how tidy the interior is for taking photos. We just want to see more!

OK, then. I will try to take photos of everything inside. If you promise not to ridicule me!

I second the request for interior pictures. I would also like to see a series of pictures of the portlight installation. I keep running through my mind as to how to make sure everything is sealed and leak-free.

Hi Amos,
I will try, but these are actually quite simple. The main problem so far is finding out what is where on the inside and the outside, if you see what I mean. We had to drill a hole from the inside to position the porthole in the correct place in the painted whale on the outside.
Anyway this is the procedure:
- Saw the big hole for the portlight.
- Put the portlight in place and mark for the bolt holes.
- Drill bolt holes slightly over size. (8mm for 6mm bolt). Use a jig to drill straight, otherwise you will get problems.
- Countersink the holes from the outside. Otherwise you might have leaks.
- Try everything, so it fits. These portlights have to match their own bronze ring at the outside of the hull, in the correct way, so you can not turn the outside ring. The bolts are fastened in the outside ring directly without nuts.
- Paint everything twice with epoxy, use pipe cleaners for the holes.
- If you need to make a plywood pad (ring) for the inside of the hull. We use 4 mm ply.
- Use masking tape on the outside so you won’t have to clean so much after weeping bedding compound.
- Apply lots of Sikaflex under the outside ring and in boltholes.
- Fasten everything. Don’t wait until the next day with the last turn on the bolts, as recommended, since it will break the seal in this case.
When fastening stuff like the windlass, etc, that needs to withstand a lot of stress, we drill larger holes, like 12 mm for 6 mm, fill with epoxy/silica (after priming the hole), let it cure, redrill, countersink, and fasten with Sikaflex.
Then we have the fasteners that are fastened in epoxy and not through bolted.
