Mast partners and partner knees

Warning! Old pictures. This is how the mast is reinforced.

Laminated pine for the mast partner under deck. Also works as an oversized backing plate for deck hardware. I don’t understand why some people use grp-tubes or stainless bolted to deck. This is much simpler for a wooden hull, anyway.

The partner knees are epoxied with large a large radius filet to the hull and deck and taped with a number of layers of glass/epoxy.

Then there is a watertight bulkhead, slightly over an inch thick. According to the plans that one isn’t really needed for the hull strength, but it sure feels fine to have it there.

Also, the mast foot, made of laminated ash, running over numerous floors goes through this bulkhead. So it shouldn’t move.

Hi Matti,

How did you glass the underside of the deck? Laid glass upside down?

Hi lself,
Yes, that is what we did. glassed it upside down. This is one of those things that would have been easier if done according to Toms specifications as I understand them. That is, lay the deck, glass top, turn deck around, glass underside, put in bulkheads, put back deck. I am sure the results will be the same though by glassing upside down. It is just a bit messy.

Hi Matti,
This is one of those things I have wondered about. I cannot see how I could turn over the deck to glass the underside without the risk of glassing in a slight twist so that it would not fit when placed back on the hull. I think it might work all right on the smaller Coins but I am not so sure about the bigger ones. Do you know of anyone who has tried Tom’s method? This is probably a subject that should appear on the Yahoo Coin site.

Hi Amos,
I suppose Tom have some ideas on how to make it work. But the general form of the deck should be quite stable once the top is glassed. And some twist could probably be untwisted when the deck is fastened on the boat again. I might worry a bit about changes due to moisture and temperature differences though, so it might be a good idea to prime the underside before taking away the molds.
