Mast hardware
Posted on July 1st, 2007 No commentsToday I was kind of lazy. Made the cleats for the mast top. It is used for attaching the halyard and lazy jacks. And also the halyard cleats for the yard. All attatchment points use a grommet or splice around the mast.
Now the oak clats lay soaking up lin seed oil over the night.

How does pre soaking the mast and hardware with oil affect glueing them together?

Well, I suppose the oil makes it impossible to glue. At least with epoxy. I don’t think it is such a good idea anyway to glue something on a solid grown mast, since it swells and shrinks with humidity and temperature changes so cracks would be inevitable. I would only glue things to something where no part was thicker than about one inch.
So these “buses” and “trucks”, as my 2 yr old son calls them, will be through bolted. I might fill the holes with epoxy just to minimize movement of the bolt but a better idea might be to use polysulfide in the holes and under the fitting. Or if Ricard reads this he might suggest something even better. What about mixing tar, wax and something illegal, like lead?

I suggest you get a haircut…

Actually Ricard, I might do that! It’s that time of the year when I usually cut my hair. So, what about some neat bedding compound?
