Window frames too expensive
Posted on June 18th, 2007 No commentsWe made some really nice plugs to forge the port hole frames in the deck house from bronze. Found a nice place where they made sculptures our of silicon bronze. They recently made a nice one of Astrid Lindgren. They understood what we wanted, 12 really simple frames of bronze. Everything seemed ok. … until we got the price quote. Too expensive for now. So we are thinking about overlaping the lexan on the inside, and make an inside frame, thick as the hull to hold it. It will probably look ugly, so we keep thinking about this one. Any good ideas, anyone?

Hi, I’m starting building a Silver Gull 19 now (in Norway), and meet the same problem as you regarding availability of bronze foundries. Have you checked overseas? What kind of prices did they ask at the foundry you checked with?

Great with a Norwegian builder of a MacNaughton design!
I ordered my rudder hangings from http://www.classicmarine.co.uk Maybe I will ask them about this as well. The foundry that I got a quote for 3000 SEK/frame. And I need two frames for each “window”.

Classic marine seems to be a nice source, you might find you can use some of their stock deadlights.
Where in Sweden are you located? I live and build right south east of Oslo.

I mainly use Toplicht in Hamburg for stock hardware. I will shop around a bit for the deadlights and portlights for the hull, though.
I am located right in Stockholm. The boat is at Djurgården.
I tend not to talk too much about destinations when it comes to boating. An old family habit. But I have been sailed to Norway twice and find it, at least north of Jaeren, to be the most beutiful sailing grounds I have visited so far, so…
